Ambassador Premjith presenting a book on Singapore’s mosquesto the Minister of Religious Endowment His Excellency Dr Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa
The Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore His Excellency Premjith S called on the Minister of Religious Endowments His Excellency Dr Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa on 15 January 2014 to discuss bilateral cooperation and the current activities and initiatives of the Ministry of Religious Endowment and Al-Azhar University to spread the message of moderation, tolerance and diversity.
On bilateral cooperation, Ambassador Premjith expressed Singapore’s appreciation to the Minister for sending Quran reciters to Singapore’s mosques during Ramadhan. Emphasising that Al-Azhar remains the top destination in the world for Singapore students pursuing Islamic studies, Ambassador Premjith also expressed gratitude to Al-Azhar University for hosting and educating thousands of Singapore students over the years.
During the meeting, Ambassador Premjith conveyed the concerns of some Singapore students over protests and disturbances at their university campuses. Minister Gomaa readily acknowledged these concerns and assured Ambassador Premjith that steps were being undertaken to enhance the security of the campuses. The safety of the students was of utmost priority. stude Ambassador Premjith thanked His Excellency Dr Gomaa for his concern and support. Minister Gomaa extended an invitation to 50 Singapore students to participate in a forthcoming week-long cultural camp co-organised by the Ministry of Religious Endowment and Al-Azhar University.
